Mississippi State University named two permanent directors for the University Television Center at the beginning of the fall semester. Ralph Olivieri became the director of operations, and Michael Godwin was given the title of director of technology.
Both men have held their positions since 2000 on an acting basis. The recent appointments allowed them to take permanent positions as directors.
“I only have positive thoughts about both men,” said communications department head Marian Huttenstine. “Both have done a remarkable job and bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to students. They have a deep interest in the university and their students.
“I couldn’t have picked a better two for the job. I have nothing but the greatest respect for them,” Huttenstine added.
In addition to heading operations at the television center, Olivieri said he also works with the beginning and advanced television classes along with the TV practicum for the communication department. However, he said the University Television Center worked with the cooperation of the communications department in educating students, and that communications and the television center were two different departments.
Aside from those duties, Olivieri directs the weekly the Mississippi educational television program “Farmweek.”
Godwin’s duties as technical director include maintaining technical and production support for WMSV-FM, as well as overseeing operations for the radio station. He also works with the information technology advisory group and other organizations.
Huttenstine commended Godwin’s knowledge and insight.
“His [Godwin’s] technical knowledge is amazing,” Huttenstine said. “I don’t think there’s ever been a time I have called him with a problem where he didn’t know the answer.”
As for the new semester, Olivieri said he is really looking forward to the first broadcast and the upcoming football season.
Karyn Brown, a communication instructor who is involved with the television center, said she was very pleased with the performances of both directors. She said both seemed willing to participate with the Student Broadcasting Association and have tried to persuade students to become part of it regularly.
