This past week has been full of irony in sports and it couldn’t have come at a better time–the Super Bowl is around the corner, college basketball is starting to get down to the nitty gritty and things are just seeming to make sense. At least in some kind of spooky cosmic way. For example, take New Orleans, La. natives Marshall Faulk and Aeneas Williams. Both worked in the Superdome as concession vendors. I think it’s only right that they are both coming back to play in the biggest game of their careers. Faulk has already played in and won a Super Bowl with the Rams in 1999, but this is Williams’ first appearance in the big show. Here’s something also to ponder. In 1996, when the men’s basketball team went to the Final Four, the Bulldogs won the southeast regional to get there. That year it was held in Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. The site of the 2002 south regional in the NCAA tournament is being held in none other than Rupp Arena. Coincidence? Maybe.
OK, once again, I have caught another mistake. Actually, it’s the same mistake I made last week. Richard Nixon was NOT the president in 1975, Gerald Ford was. Nixon resigned in 1974. I thought it was quite embarrassing to make the mistake the first time, but I found it to be even more so the second time. So, from now on, I’m going to attempt to stay away from presidential references in my column and just stick to what I know best–sports.<</p>
