The Mississippi Tax Commission recently made a decision that would put taxes on the meals bought at Perry Cafeteria. Although the taxes were planned to take effect at the start of the 2006-07 academic year, MSU decided to start doing this tomorrow.
This move by the commission contradicts what Haley Barbour said years ago. Barbour assured us that he wouldn’t raise taxes.
Instead of making an obvious tax, this effort to tax food bought at the cafeteria is a sly way to get money from the people.
Fortunately for those with meal plans, this tax will not affect them. When it starts tomorrow, those who pay with cash or MoneyMate will pay extra. However, the commission is still deciding whether to implement this tax on meal plans.
If the tax does affect the meal plans, the earliest that it will start will be during fall 2006.
