Tuesday, Mississippi State University Homecoming election results were planned to be released at 10 p.m. However, just before the announcement, the Student Association said the results would be postponed until 1 p.m. Wednesday.
SA Attorney General Nathan Upchurch said the election commission received a call about a possible election violation around 9 p.m. Tuesday. Since the attorney general is not usually present at the election unless an issue about the constitution occurs, Upchurch did not arrive until around 9:15 p.m.
He said the results were postponed because he and the commission did not feel as though an efficient investigation could be conducted before the scheduled announcement.
“We wanted to uphold the integrity of the election since one-fourth of the student population voted, which is the highest turn out we’ve ever had,” Upchurch said.
He said he began making phone calls and looking into the allegation. He had no names of the accused candidates in order to prevent any bias.
“We concluded the allegation had minimal to no effect and we closed the investigation,” Upchurch said.
He said the violations were all first offenses, and warnings were issued. As a policy, the SA does not release details of these violations, since they are only warnings.
“If it had been at 4 [p.m.], we would not have postponed the announcement,” Upchurch said.
