Starkville Police investigate student death

UPDATE: Michael Hunt, Oktibbeha County coroner, released new information regarding the cause of Austin Powell’s death.
“Information came back to show that it was a gunshot wound to the head,” Hunt said. “It appears to be an accidental death.”
He said the police department is interviewing witnesses and waiting on the ballistics report, but the investigation is wrapping up.

The Starkville Police Department is investigating the death of a 23-year-old Mississippi State University student.

Austin Powell, senior communication major from Memphis, Tennessee, was confirmed dead by Hunt, in the early morning of June 21.

Hunt said he was notified at 1:57 a.m. Friday. The incident took place at a residence on Maxwell Street, located in the Cotton District. 
Corporal Brandon Lovelady of the Starkville Police Department said no foul play is suspected at this point. 
Powell’s death is under further investigation by the police department and his body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
