The Mississippi State women’s golf team concluded regular season play this past weekend, finishing in 13th at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The Lady Bulldogs fired a 957 for the tournament and notched their 8th top 15 finish as a team this season.
“Even though we finished in 13th, everyone that finished ahead of us was ranked higher than we were,” MSU head coach Christi Sanders said. “It was not necessarily a bad finish for us, and I don’t think it will hurt our chances of making it to (NCAA) regionals.
Leading the way for State was junior Amanda Mathis. Mathis shot a three-round total of 226 and finished in a tie for 12th.
Senior Stephanie Godare concluded the event in a tie for 51st after shooting a 239. Sophomore Julia Huh shot a 245 and finished in a tie for 71st while senior Ashleigh Korzack carded a 247 and finished in a tie for 75th.
Freshman Leigh Phillips rounded out the scorecard for MSU, shooting a 255 and finished her third-career tournament in 90th.
Host Georgia edged out Auburn by two strokes to take the team title for the third consecutive year. Florida State’s Caroline Westrup won the individual competition, shooting a five-over for the tournament, including a final round 71.
Mississippi State’s next action will come on April 14-16 in Nashville, Tenn. at the SEC Championship. Vanderbilt is the host for this year’s tournament, which will be held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
“Right now I think we have a good chance of making it to the NCAA Regionals,” Sanders said. “However a good showing at the SEC Championship would solidify our chances as we try to meet one of our goals by winning the tournament.”
The Lady Bulldogs are currently ranked 50th in the latest Golfweek rankings. Mathis leads the team with a 74.12 stroke average and has been MSU’s top finisher in all eight tournaments this season.
