OK, I will fess up–us sportswriters don’t know everything all the time.
We speculate now and then. Sometimes we’re right–we’ll bring these times up as often as we can, but we won’t remind you if we are ever wrong.
Preseason voting is nothing more than hearsay, a Ouija board or Magic 8 Ball, and the all-powerful gut feeling–or is that indigestion from a hot dog?
At the SEC preseason media day, we had Kentucky winning the East and South Carolina being the least. The two will play Saturday and make us look smart or dumb.
We had MSU at third in the West behind two sets of Tigers. The Dawgs returned one starter, but have beaten both LSU and Auburn on the road, hindering our reliability as prognosticators.
When we cast those votes, we have what we saw last year and what we hear from coaches, players and scouts.
After the majority of writers left, Stansbury told a couple of us, “I like this team.”
It wasn’t what he said, but the way he said it.
I wanted to change my vote right then, but it was too late.
He said that same sentence that same way at the opening press conference in 2001. That team won more games than any in school history.
These Dawgs keep proving us wrong–but you didn’t hear that from me.
As Cliff Ellis said Saturday, “They’re running away with this thing.”
In the women’s game we put Tennessee on top (so far so good) and MSU in the middle of the pack.
After an 0-3 SEC start, the Lady Dawgs have regained their composure and won three of four.
We put Tan White as a All-SEC first teamer.
A career high 33 Thursday and 30 points on Sunday have us looking pretty good.
Thanks Tan, our egos appreciate it.
