Joining our Staff

Thank you for your interest! Joining the Reflector is a great opportunity to learn and connect with other students. Applications are open to all students of different majors.

The Reflector is committed to helping our staff produce quality work. However, to do so, applicants must be able to handle deadlines and work under pressure. Writers and photographers are encouraged to take at least one assignment a month. Outside of that, the time commitment is very flexible.

Positions at the Reflector are paid after a trial period.

Writers

The Reflector has four sections: News, Sports, Life & Entertainment and Opinion. Writers can choose one or multiple sections to write for.

We ask that all of our writers use multiple sources and grow familiar with the interview process. This can seem intimidating at first, but it is incredibly helpful in the long run and can allow you to meet and talk with people you might never have met before.

News writers are the backbone of our paper. They cover everything, from the exciting to the mundane. All news is important, so we cover as much as we can.

Life & Entertainment writers cover local entertainment, events, people and food. They capture the essence of life in the community and highlight local people and places.

Opinion writers share their views on local, national and global news. They provide credible sources to support their arguments to the best of their ability. As a historic institution, we have shared numerous unpopular opinions. All we care about is whether the opinion is valid, properly sourced and within our publication standards.

Sports writers cover any and all Mississippi State Athletics. This includes game recaps, columns, interviews and feature stories.

Photographers

Photographers work closely with editors and writers to add images to our print stories. We also publish submissions on our website and social media platforms. Applicants should have a working knowledge of DSLR operation and settings, as well as strong communication skills. Creativity is always appreciated.

Graphic Designers

Graphic designers will work with the Reflector staff to create graphics and illustrations for Reflector articles and social media. Applicants should have experience creating digital illustrations and graphics.

Editor Positions

All editorial positions will proofread stories for grammar and spelling errors and ensure that all stories follow AP style. Editors regularly hold staff meetings, check for accuracy, assess source credibility and provide suggestions to improve the paper. Production occurs on Tuesday, following editorial meetings on Monday.

I’ve applied. What now?

The Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editor will look at your application. They will contact you if they wish to set up an interview.
You will be interviewed at a scheduled time.
Following your interview, you will be contacted again and given the results of your application.
