A percussion recital on Sunday will be the first of several Mississippi State University faculty-performed recitals.
The faculty recitals are a new addition to the Lyceum Concert Series. In the past, the Lyceum Series only invited off-campus performing arts groups to perform. The off-campus performing arts groups represent a variety of the performing arts from dance to instrumental music to song.
“Not only will there be the five or six performances from off campus performing arts groups, but also about six recitals performed by our own talent,” said Maridith Geuder, chair of the performing arts committee, who organizes the Lyceum Series.
Geuder said that adding the faculty performances expands the opportunity for the students and community to experience the talent here on campus.
Faculty have not performed with the Lyceum Series before.
This performance will be the first time the Lyceum Faculty Chamber Series has advertised with the Lyceum Series, Damm said.
He selected both classical and original compositions for the recital. The compositions include three dances for solo snare, Pachelbel’s Canon in D on the vibraphone and a Mexican dance for the marimba.
Damm will also perform an original piece titled “Ritmos de Congas” which is an original Spanish-style composition. It will be performed with a compact disc accompaniment that he composed and recorded.
Michael Chupa, a research assistant at the MSU Remote Sensing Technology Center, will be a guest performer. Chupa and Damm built an Ugandan style xylophone on which they will perform two pieces. One piece is of a contemporary style, and the other models Ugandan music.
Damm will also collaborate with Buddy Collier, a Starkville elementary school teacher, to perform a medley of Caribbean songs. Collier will play guitar and sing while Damm plays the steal pans. The medley includes two of Collier’s original songs and a Bob Marley song.
Damm will also perform a solo modeled after the jazz style of bebop drummer Max Roach. He will close the recital with Flight of the Bumblebee on marimba.
The recital will be held in the Bettersworth Auditorium in the Giles architecture building at 3 p.m. Lyceum Series season ticket holders and students, ID card, will be allowed in free of charge. There will be a $5 charge for non-season ticket holders.
