This weekend Mississippi State University’s Black Voices will host a musical conference to celebrate their 31st anniversary. The group performed its first concert in April 1971. “Raising the Standard” begins at 9 p.m. tonight with a free concert by gospel choirs, including United Harmony from MUW and Total Praise of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Columbus.
“We’ve invited about six different choirs to help us celebrate our anniversary. We encourage everyone to attend for food, fun and fellowship,” Black Voices president Willie Sanders said.
Workshops will be held Saturday to teach the importance of bettering oneself.
“The classes are to enlighten choir members, directors and leaders in different areas of religion to improve themselves as individuals and choirs,” Sanders said.
Bishop L. Spencer Smith of Greater New Testament in Tuscaloosa, Ala., will give an assembly on “Raising the Standard.” Tickets for the conference are available for one or both days and include supplies and meals.
Black Voices will perform their spring concert tonight at at Emmanuel Baptist Chruch in Columbus. Special guests include recording artists Testament, also from Greater New Testament. Concert tickets are $5 for MSU students and $8 for the public.
