Mississippi State sophomore Pierre Mouillon advanced to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional, highlighting action for the MSU tennis team at the Raquet Club of Memphis last week. Mouillon, ranked 121st nationally, was victorious in his first two matches and came just two wins short of qualifying for the National Indoor Championships next month.
Mouillon opened play in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In his first match, Mouillon defeated Kai Schledorn of Middle Tennessee State 6-4, 6-4. On day two, Mouillon breezed to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Auburn’s Terence Nugent in his third-round match. In the round of 16, Mouillon knocked off 68th-ranked and 9-16 seed Alex Hume of Kentucky, rallying from a one set deficit to win 5-7, 6-0, 6-1.
In his quarterfinal match, Mouillon fell to South Florida’s Dirk Britzen 6-2, 6-3.
Two other Bulldog netters advanced to the third round of the main draw before falling. Sophomore Philippe Frayssinoux, ranked 84th nationally, won his opening match 7-5, 7-5 over Florida Atlantic’s Kevin Obletz. Junior Ivan Bjelica won his second round match 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 over UAB’s Anton Mavrin but fell to 20th-ranked Josh Cohen of Miami.
Both Bulldogs would fall in their third round matches to end their play in the tournament. Bulldog freshmen Ryan Farlow and Eric Lim won their opening round matches in the qualifying draw of singles, but came one win short of advancing to the main draw.
All three doubles teams that competed for the Bulldogs dropped their opening match in the main draw. The Bulldogs next action will be Oct. 28-30 in Lafayette, La., at the Hibernia Tennis Classic.
