A 19-year-old man accused of shooting two people at Canterbury Townhouses is now in the custody of the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department.
The alleged shooter, Steven Michael East Jr., 19, turned himself in to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Friday afternoon, chief deputy George Carrithers told The Starkville Daily News. His bond will be set early next week, he said.
After he turned himself in, East was taken to Starkville and charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
He is accused of shooting two men, a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old, in the legs after an apparent dispute over a XBox video game system and Xbox games, Carrithers said. Both are believed to be in good condition.
Aggravated assault is assault that could cause serious bodily harm, Oktibbeha County Sheriff Dolph Bryan said.
“If you came around here and hit me with just your hand, that’s simple assault,” he said. If a person used an object as a weapon to assault another person, the charge would be aggravated assault, he added.
In April, East was charged with three counts of selling marijuana, and in December 2004, he was arrested on a charge of burglary of a building.
