Movie Gallery announced Sept. 19 they would do their part to help the victims and families of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack by donating 25 cents for every video or game rented on Sept. 29 to the United Way New York Community Trust fund. From the 1,084 Movie Gallery stores across America, close to $800,000 was raised, according to Jaime Wilson, manager of Starkville Movie Gallery.
Wilson said the final figures are not currently in for the Starkville store.
“We’re very proud to assist in some small way in this tragedy that has really captured the hearts of all Americans,” said Steven Roy, executive vice president and chief financial officer for Movie Gallery.
Movie Gallery has stores in 31 states and is one of the three largest video retailers in the country. Movie Gallery is also the leading producer of movie and game rentals in suburban and rural areas in the United States, according to a press release issued by the company.
“Sept. 11 was a sad day for all Americans and people throughout the world,” said Joe Malugen, chairman and chief executive officer of Movie Gallery. “The more than 8,500 associates of our company, who for the most part live in America’s small towns, want to help the relief effort for this national tragedy.
“Our hearts go out to the victims, their loved ones and the rescue workers. We are sharing a portion of receipts from our busiest day of the week to give both our customers and associates the opportunity to do their part.
