The Lady Bulldogs basketball team will close out the regular season on Sunday as they play host to No. 6 LSU. Sunday is senior day at Humphrey Coliseum, when Mississippi State will recognize its three seniors.
Playing their last regular season game at Humphrey Coliseum are Imesia Jackson, Miayorka Johnson and Amy Reeder.
All three hail from Mississippi: Jackson is from Crawford, Johnson is from Ripley and Reeder is from Pontotoc.
MSU head coach Sharon Fanning praised her team’s performance this season.
“Since the first Tennessee ballgame, I feel like we’ve played with much better intensity and effort,” she said.
Fanning said being able to compete well with strong conference teams shows the improvement in her team.
“In six games, we’ve had two really good ballgames against a top five team in Tennessee, a hard-fought battle against top 25 Georgia and big wins over Florida and at South Carolina,” Fanning said.
She said she hopes the team will continue in the same manner as they prepare to face a difficult LSU team.
“Our expectations right now are to continue to improve and to continue with our work ethic and work to extend that for a 40-minute period,” Fanning said.
LSU (23-4, 12-0 SEC) leads the conference with a perfect conference mark. Their most recent outing was a non-conference loss at home to No. 1 Connecticut. All but one of the Lady Tigers’ four losses have been at the hands of teams currently in the top five, including Rutgers and Maryland.
The lone exception was a baffling 11-point loss at Middle Tennessee State University.
The Lady Tigers claimed the first meeting between the ball clubs on Jan. 20, taking the overall record between the schools to 37-4.
Mississippi State looks to pick up its first win against the Lady Tigers since 1995.
