Photos of Brewski’s missing roof spread quickly across YikYak Sunday night, leaving Mississippi State University students wondering what happened to the Starkville seafood market.

The damage, likely caused by the 21-mile-per-hour wind gusts from the severe weather moving through Starkville, tore off the building’s tin roof and left the upstairs office exposed to heavy rain, according to owner Ashley Ray.

Ray said she first learned something was wrong around 10:30 p.m. when an employee called with an unexpected update.

“I was like, ‘What do you mean?'” Ray said. “She said the electricity went out, so she went outside to check, and that’s when she saw the metal from the roof on the power lines.”

The fallen debris temporarily knocked out power along Highway 12 and nearby areas, Ray said.

Ray, along with her husband and father, arrived shortly after and began clearing debris.

“We came up to the office, and it was literally like water was just running down the walls,” Ray said. “It was just kind of crazy.

Most of the damage was contained to the upstairs office, where water intrusion ruined computers, phones and other equipment.

“It was literally raining inside,” she said.

Despite the damage to the upstairs, Brewski’s remains open, as the first-floor store was not significantly affected.

As of Monday, parts of the roof were still missing, leaving the building vulnerable to additional weather.

“We have no roof right now,” Ray said. “So we hope it stays dry.”

Ray said she appreciated the MSU community’s concern, especially from students who shared photos and reacted online.

“We are very thankful that y’all are concerned about us,” Ray said. “We are here, and we are open.”
