The Mississippi State Athletic Department has been victorious in its two matchups against Ole Miss this season, indicating that there could be good luck ahead for the Bulldogs during the Egg Bowl matchup on Nov. 28.
Between Mississippi State soccer and volleyball, the Ole Miss Rebels have not seen a win this season against the Bulldogs, and fans are hoping to keep it that way.
Mississippi State dominated in a 2-0 win over the Rebels on Oct. 2, bringing home the Magnolia Cup for the sixth season in a row. This means life without the cup in Starkville is a mystery even to senior players.
The MSU soccer team only allowed the Rebels to have three shots on goal, while the Bulldogs had seven, two of which resulted in a goal. Not only was this the third shutout conference play of the season, but it marked the fourth consecutive year that the Rebels could not score a goal on MSU.
In the second half of the game, sophomore midfielder Kara Harris found herself scoring the first goal of the game and her second of the season. Four minutes later, senior midfielder Ally Perry scored her seventh goal of the season with help from Zoe Main, a freshman forward.
Perry has scored in every conference match this season and is the sixth player in MSU history to earn 20 goals during her time as a Bulldog.
Soccer is not the only MSU sport to experience victory over the Rebels this season. The MSU volleyball team sent the Rebels back to Oxford with a 3-1 loss against the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Mississippi State led the game with a win in the first two sets but allowed Ole Miss to secure the third set in the match. The Bulldogs proceeded to shut down Rebel hopes, ending the match with a 26-24 fourth set to secure the win.
The 2025 season marks the third consecutive year in which MSU has defeated the Rebels in volleyball. Lindsey Mangelson, a freshman outside hitter from Indiana, led the team in this match with 16 kills, one ace and one block. She also had 19 digs over the four sets, making it a career high.
The win against Ole Miss marked Head Coach Darty Dennis’ 100th win at Mississippi State University.
A crowd of 1,024 Bulldog fans showed up to the Newell-Grissom, making it the seventh-highest attendance in program history. Fans are noticing the Bulldogs make a turn for the better, and it can only be hoped that this good luck streak will extend to the football team as they are a month out from their annual matchup against Ole Miss.
MSU Football started out the season strong with a 4-0 winning streak, but gained its first loss against Tennessee, followed by a second loss to Texas A&M. Obviously, fans want their team to win as many games as possible, but in Mississippi, it can be argued that the biggest game of the season is the Egg Bowl.
Mississippi State football has been on a losing streak against the Rebels since 2023, but this season seems to be heading in a better direction than the last. Both volleyball and soccer hosted Ole Miss in Starkville this year, and the Rebels’ football team will also be making the trip to Starkville.
For the Bulldog fanbase, it may be delusion or just pure faith, but it can not be a coincidence that all three sports are hosting the Rebels in Starkville. So far, two of the three have sent them back home with a loss, creating a question among the fanbase that has been circulating: could football continue on the 2025 beat Ole Miss streak?
The Egg Bowl will be held in Davis Wade Stadium on Nov. 28 with an 11 a.m. kickoff. The season may not be as promising as we hoped, but fans are expected to show up, wear maroon and ring their cowbells for what may be the biggest rivalry in college football.
