On Friday, April 25, Mississippi State University’s Bulldog Bash committee announced that “Mississippi’s largest free outdoor concert” will be moving indoors for 2025. On Oct. 23, 2025, Bulldog Bash will take place in Humphrey Coliseum, or “The Hump,” for the first time.
While this brings new opportunities for traditional Bulldog Bash festivities such as the Maroon Market, it also brings questions of The Hump’s capacity with the growth that Bulldog Bash has seen of late. Since the increase in the student activity fee from $5 to $25 has increased the budget of Bulldog Bash, the number of attendees has increased as well.
The Hump’s current capacity is roughly 9,100, according to The Commercial Dispatch. According to the Bulldog Bash website, the largest Bulldog Bash to date had more than 15,000 attendees. With the previous two Bulldog Bash headliners, Jason Derulo and Ludacris, bringing out massive crowds with their monumental names, The Hump simply cannot hold the crowd that those names might bring.
Where opportunity lies in this, however, is that Bulldog Bash can shift from one major headlining artist to multiple niche artists playing throughout the day. This would lower crowd numbers and allow students who are fans of these smaller artists to see them entirely for free.
While the main street revitalization project is likely the reason for the move to The Hump, the limitations will more than likely shift the size of the event to a large degree. If the event holds to form and a massive name is brought in to headline the show, many students are bound to be left disappointed as they will be unable to attend due to capacity restrictions.
While this shift is risky and has left many students wondering why, there are still ways that Bulldog Bash can bring excellent artists, vendors and memories to all students in 2025.
