Sources have confirmed that the Mississippi State football program is moving on from defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler, and, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the program has its eyes on former Bulldog coach Zach Arnett to return as defensive coordinator.
The decision comes after two difficult seasons under Hutzler, who produced some of the lowest defensive numbers in more than a decade. In 2024, the Bulldogs allowed more than 34 points per game and over 450 yards per game, ranking last in the SEC in both categories. The 2025 unit improved slightly but still finished near the bottom of the league in scoring defense at around 29 points per game and gave up more than 400 yards per game. Mississippi State struggled to stop the run, limit explosive plays or create consistent pressure, which made a change feel needed.
Arnett, on the other hand, built some of the strongest defenses the program has seen in recent years during his time as defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022. Before he became head coach, Arnett’s defenses ranked fifth in the SEC in total defense in 2020, climbed to third in 2021 and finished within the top five again in 2022. Those units routinely held opponents under 360 yards per game, finished among the league leaders in takeaways, and limited explosive plays with his 3–3–5 structure. That identity faded after Arnett became head coach, and the drop-off under Hutzler highlighted how important Mississippi State’s defensive backbone had been.
Arnett was promoted to head coach in December 2022 following the death of Mike Leach. His full season in charge came in 2023, but the Bulldogs struggled to find consistency on either side of the ball and opened the year 4–6. Mississippi State fired Arnett on November 13, 2023, after ten games. The decision was framed as a reset for the program, but inside the community, he was still credited for guiding the team through an emotional and unprecedented transition. Athletics director Zac Selmon noted at the time that Arnett provided stability when the program needed it most.
“Zach took on an unprecedented and challenging situation last December,” Selmon said in 2023. “He provided the football program much-needed leadership and stability during a tragic time.”
Now, Mississippi State appears ready to bring him back to the role where he built some of the strongest defenses the program has seen in recent years.
Arnett’s journey since leaving Starkville has been busy. After his dismissal in 2023, he spent 2024 at Ole Miss as an analyst before accepting the defensive coordinator job at UNLV under Dan Mullen. He later resigned for personal reasons and joined Florida State’s staff as a defensive analyst for the 2025 season. Multiple programs pursued him for defensive coordinator openings, including Appalachian State, but a return to Starkville always seemed like a natural fit if the Bulldogs chose to reset their defense.
That reset has now arrived.
If finalized, Arnett will inherit a roster with young linebackers, developing secondary talent and a defensive front that needs direction. Staff adjustments are expected to follow once he is officially in place, but no specific hires have been announced yet.
Mississippi State is betting that returning to a proven defensive voice can stabilize the side of the ball that has cost the program games in recent years. Arnett has led this defense once already. The Bulldogs are counting on him to do it again.
Mississippi State officially confirmed the hire early Sunday morning.
