It begins to feel like fall when the leaves turn their orange hue, the chilly weather nips at your nose and when fall movies like “Twilight” somehow creep their way onto your movie night watchlist.
“Twilight” is back in theaters, and it seems that, like the Cullens, this saga could just be immortal after all.
This fall marks 20 years since Stephanie Meyer’s first book of her hit four part saga “Twilight” was released. The book was first featured in stores on Sept. 27, 2005, and the series has continued to grow since.
“Twilight” fans, or “twihards,” will have five days to watch each movie starting Oct. 29 through Nov. 2, with one movie being shown per day. From “Twilight” to “Breaking Dawn: Part 2,” fans will have plenty of time to sink their teeth into the world of Edward Cullen, Jacob Black and Bella Swan.
The movies are coming to select theaters across the United States, with one theater being Starkville’s UEC Hollywood Premier Cinemas. The theater will feature the films during their selected days with showings at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m, with some showings at 10:00 p.m. as well. Tickets will be $10 and are available for purchase on UEC’s website.
The movies will be shown on their designated days, starting with “Twilight” on Oct. 29, “New Moon” on Oct. 30, “Eclipse” on the Oct. 31, “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” on Nov. 1 and “Breaking Dawn: Part 2” on Nov. 2.
Seth Parsley, the general manager at UEC Hollywood Premier Cinemas in Starkville, says he thinks the movies being re-released is a good idea, and he is hoping for a good turnout.
“I definitely think that it is a good idea to do some of these re-releases because younger audiences didn’t get to see them in theaters,” Parsley said.
Some fans who did not get to see the movies in theaters are ecstatic to have the opportunity to see them on the big screen.
Courtney Clark, a sophomore marketing major form Salt Lake City, Utah, says that she will be seeing the movies in theaters and is passionate about “Twilight” being a good movie for all ages.
“It is a good movie that you can watch and enjoy and it doesn’t matter who you’re with,” Clark said. “You can be with younger kids or older people. There’s nothing inappropriate in it to where it is something you can’t enjoy with everyone around you.”
With the majority of “Twilight” fans being young teenage girls or teenage millennials when the series first released in theaters, it seems that “Twilight” is making a comeback, but not just in theaters.
On the notably well-liked social media app, TikTok, edits are still being created by fans for the Cullen clan and Quileute tribe, but what still makes “Twilight“ so popular?
It could be because of the nostalgia that comes from watching the movies as teens and obsessing over the romantic tension between Edward and Bella, the century old fascination with the mystery of vampires or maybe even the idea of love triangles.
After all, love triangles have begun to take over the film industry, with some shows and movies like “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” “The Notebook” and “The Vampire Diaries,” quickly becoming fan favorites.
Even with all of the popular love triangles today, “Twilight” has one of the most notable. One of the first questions that comes to mind when talking to any twihard is, “Are you team Edward or team Jacob?”
Mississippi State University student Mary Frances Welsch, a sophomore biochemistry major with a pre-med concentration, still says she is a “Twilight” and team Edward fan.
“I used to be team Jacob,” Welsch said, laughing. “It’s actually such a horrible thing to say, because I’m 100% team Edward now.”
Viewers and fans all over the internet and social media argue over who is better for Bella Swan. Along with Welsch, some fans may ultimately switch who they favor for Bella as time goes on.
With “Twilight” coming back to theaters, it would not be surprising to see a spark in team Edward and Jacob fans coming out of the woods or stepping into the light to defend their choices.
While some fans are diehard team Edward and team Jacob fans, some people like Clark have decided they are team Edward and team vampire.
“The love story itself is just something everyone wishes they could have like a high school love, especially with a vampire,” Clark said.
While some viewers will want to debate about the love triangle, others are just excited for the chance to see nostalgic movies with friends. Welsch spoke about the fun of watching these movies with others.
“It’s so fun to watch, especially with friends,” Welsch said. “It has so much drama in it and it’s so entertaining.”
Along with the movies coming back out in theaters, collectible book items will be coming out in book stores for twihards and new fans to enjoy along with a youtube channel where fans can see exclusive content from the movies.
So hold on tight, spider monkeys. Whether you are team Edward, team Jacob or just there for the nostalgia, you do not want to miss the opportunity to see the five part “Twilight” saga in theaters once again.
