A Mississippi State University student was injured in a shooting Friday night following a high school football game in Sharkey County, authorities said.
Quindale Wise Jr., an agricultural science major, was hospitalized after the shooting and was listed in stable condition as of Monday, according to WLBT.
Wise was discovered with two gunshot wounds lying outside the football stadium where South Delta High School was playing Simmons High School in Rolling Fork.
Wise’s injury was among several incidents of gun violence that swept across Mississippi on Friday night while MSU students were out for fall break. At least eight people were killed and more than 20 were injured in three separate high school football-related shootings, according to the Associated Press.
Two people, Justin Pam and Michael Miles Jr., were arrested in connection with the Sharkey County shooting. The Sharkey County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details about the suspects or what led to the gunfire.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” a statement from the Sharkey County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook reads. “We ask the community to come together in support and remain positive as the investigation continues.”
The deadliest of the weekend’s shootings occurred early Saturday morning in Leland, where six people were killed and about 20 were injured following a high school homecoming game. Four victims died at the scene, and two others later died in hospitals.
State Sen. Derrick Simmons, who serves Leland in District 12, told the AP that people gathered downtown after the game when gunfire erupted.
According to WAPT, five people have been arrested in connection with the shooting – Terrogernal Martin, 33, Morgan Lattimore, 25, Teviyon Powell, 29 and William Bryant, 29, are all charged with capital murder. Latoya Powell, 44, is charged with attempted murder. The FBI announced on Tuesday night that it is still searching for additional suspects.
The shooting in Leland is the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. this year.
One hundred thirty miles south of Starkville, three people were killed on the campus of Heidelberg High School during Friday night’s homecoming festivities. The identities of the victims have not been released, but Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves reported on X that one of the deceased victims was an expectant mother.
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said that 18-year-old Tyler Goodloe was arrested Sunday and is charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon on educational property. On Monday, the department also arrested 19-year-old Darmarin Starks with charges of accessory after the fact and tampering with physical evidence.
Reeves said in a social media post on X that the state is “praying for the victims and their families,” and added that “those responsible will be brought to justice.”
