Starkville police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a Friday night shooting at The Block Townhomes and The Social Block apartments that left one victim in critical condition.
Marshall Overstreet, of Starkville, was arrested Sunday around 3 p.m. on a residential street off Old Highway 25, according to Starkville police. He is charged with attempted murder and is being held on a $5 million bond.
Shots were reported about 9:50 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of The Block Townhomes on South Montgomery Street, less than a mile away from the Mississippi State University campus. The bullets traveled through a fence and struck the victim in the parking lot of The Social Block.
Police said the victim was not the intended target of the attack and was shot after being misidentified by the suspect. The suspect’s motives remain unknown at this time.
“This makes the situation all the more tragic, that an innocent person was caught up in the violence. It should have never happened in the first place,” Starkville Police Chief Mark Ballard said during a press conference Monday.
Ballard said the victim’s wife was in the area of the shooting.
Ballard said investigators do not believe Overstreet acted alone and that additional arrests are expected. He added that officers worked around the clock over the weekend, collecting video, conducting interviews and calling in help from other departments to ensure the arrest.
The incident has raised concerns for students and residents who live near the off-campus apartments. Ballard said police are increasing patrols in the area, working with apartment management to improve security and encouraging apartment owners to install security cameras.
“Our first responsibility is always to the people that are directly impacted by crime,” Ballard said. “The victim was injured in a place where he should feel safe.”
This investigation remains ongoing.
