The Reflector: Beth, tell me about your last hole in one. Beth Irwin: Well, we were running a little late, so I let this girl (from NC State) go ahead and hit first. I didn’t really see it, but I thought it went in the hole, and I told my dad, who was following me, that it might have gone in, and he asked if I wanted him to go look, and I said “No, I’m just going to hit.” So, I hit, and we saw it go in the hole, and we were jumping up and down, and then I asked my dad to go and see if there were two balls in the hole, and there were, so we’re all jumping up and down for ten minutes. Then the next girl hit, and she only hit it on the green.
The Reflector: Was that your first?
Beth: No, but it was my first in competition.
The Reflector: Who else has made one?
Catalina Olarte: I made one this summer.
Anna Knutsson: I have three, but none of them were here.
The Reflector: Is there any rivalry while you guys play at all?
Beth: Maybe against some people, but not really any teams.
Natalie Booth: We really just play the course instead of the people.
The Reflector: What is your favorite off-course activity?
All: Shopping!
The Reflector: Favorite road trip is?
Catalina: Destin, or any place with a mall.
The Reflector: What’s your favorite course?
Natalie: Athens, Ga. I like that course.
Beth: No, too hilly. I like LSU. No, wait. Actually, I like Kentucky.
Ashleigh Korzack: (Laughing) I like Old Waverly.
Catalina: I like Kentucky too, but my favorite is my home course in Bogota.
Anna: My favorite course is in Slovenia.
The Reflector: Who is your dream foursome?
Christi Sanders: Mine is Kevin Costner, Tina Turner and Nancy Lopez.
The Reflector: Tina Turner? Is there an inside story to that?
Beth: She idolizes Tina. Coach Sanders is coach by day, Tina Turner by night. (Laughing) She’ll put on the wig and the high heels, it’s hilarious.
Janet Dyer: My boyfriend, Happy Gilmore and I’ll take Natalie along with me. Sofie Andersson: My sister, Tom Cruise and Annika Sorenstam.
Ashleigh: I think I would want Tiger in there.
Beth: I would want Nancy Lopez, too.
Anna: I would definitely want to play with Annika Sorenstam, Tiger and Tom Cruise.
Natalie: Brad Pitt, Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam.
Sofie: I would want Brad Pitt, too, but he would have to cut his hair first.
The Reflector: Do you have pre-round rituals?
Ashleigh: I’m kind of superstitious.
Beth: I always have to hit one sand wedge shot before I play.
Anna: I can’t have three tees in my pocket, and I never pick up a tee.
The Reflector: Do you play jokes on each other?
Christi: On the airplane they do. Pieces of notebook paper kept falling out of my hair and Beth happened to be sitting behind me.
The Reflector: You wouldn’t do anything like that to your coach, would you, Beth?
Beth: (Grinning) Of course not.
Sofie: We stole the van once.
The Reflector: You stole the van?
Christi: They did. I came out of a grocery store with our academic adviser who was with us on the trip and one of the players, and we were getting stuff to drink for the next day. We had parked the van pretty close to the store, then we came out, and the van was clear across the parking lot, so we had to carry all this heavy water and Gatorade across the lot.
The Reflector: Who drove?
All: Catalina!
Christi: So I got back and I said, “This van isn’t in the same place,” and they were like “What?” So I made them get out and run across the parking lot.
The Reflector: Who’s the most outgoing?
Christi: I think they all are.
The Reflector: Favorite type of music?
Janet: Everything.
Sofie: No country.
Beth: Usually whatever is on the radio at the time.
The Reflector: Do you guys sing in the car?
All: Oh yeah.
The Reflector: CAN you sing?
All: (Laughing) No!
The Reflector: Most memorable moment in golf?
Sofie: I played with a guy who hit in the woods, and his ball was about 10 yards behind a tree. He hit the ball, and it came back and hit him on the head.
The Reflector: All this time you’ve played and THAT is your most memorable?
Ashleigh: Mine is getting second in Canada at the nationals.
Christi: When I won the Mississippi State Amateur and when my team won three tournaments in a row in the fall and our ranking went to fifth in the nation.
Janet: Mine doesn’t really have to do with golf, but I’ve never really been sick in my life and as soon as I come here I had to be taken to the ER twice.
Natalie: Nothing really special. I mean, I won a few tournaments, but nothing big.
