Over the Kentucky game weekend, there was an increased amount of car burglaries at Mississippi State University, MSU Police Chief Georgia Lindley said.
“When we have a big increase in traffic, [more car burglaries occur],” she said. “Unfortunately, this happens from time to time.”
The MSU Police Department is currently investigating the cases for connections and has made one arrest thus far, she said.
Detective Brad Massey, the lead investigator of the case, said the investigation is still on going.
“We’re still looking into leads and making arrests down the road,” he said.
Massey said other possible suspects have been identified and the burglaries are interconnected.
Lindley said MSU students should take precautions to avoid becoming victims of a burglary.
“Students need to lock their car doors,” she said. “In a lot of these cases the doors [were unlocked.]”
Massey said students should avoid leaving anything of value, like GPS systems, iPads, purses, backpacks and laptops in their cars.
“These are the things these guys are looking for,” he said.
Massey said if valuables are kept in the car, students should lock them in the trunk.
Lindley said to keep items out of front seats and place them under the seat on the floorboard
Massey said students should contact the police department if they see someone acting suspicious in the parking lot.
The police department can be contacted at 325-2121.
