The smell, taste and warmth of Starbucks coffee will be served at the Campus Activity Board’s Shot Night starting at 6 p.m. in the Dawg House Thursday.
Shot Night was created last semester by CAB’s coffeehouse division head Jacob Jones.
Jones said the coffeehouse division is kind of a singer-songwriter deal which aims to get students more involved. Students who want to sing at the coffeehouse are encouraged to do so.
“You could come by and get that extra kick to keep you going. It’s a good break. And it’s back by popular demand,” he said.
The Colvard Student Union Starbucks is supplying four different flavors of coffee, which are chosen by the staff Thursday night, Starbucks supervisor Mark Threet said.
“As far as just regular coffee goes, which is what we’ll be serving, [people] usually ask for house because that’s what they’re used to. And it’s a medium roast, so it’s user friendly,” he said.
Threet said Starbucks is also supplying Pike Place, the new promotional blend. It will take the place of the house blend for now. It is a medium roast and has a smoother finish than other coffees.
There will also be a decaf option available to students who do not need an extra boost of energy and a bold flavor for those who want to wake up their taste buds.
State Fountain Bakery manager for dining services Nav Ashford said the bakery is carrying Verona because its dark and chocolatey aroma represents Valentine’s Day. The bakery is the retail location for Starkbucks.
He said this event is fun because students get to try the different types of coffee to see the differences between the blends.
“I think it’s a good idea and especially having it right next to the coffee shop,” Threet said. “A lot of people think coffee is coffee, but Starbucks offers a lot of flavors. [Shot Night] gives people an opportunity to try something new that they might want to get on their way to class.”
Students who are nervous about drinking coffee will have the option to add sugar and creamer to cut some of the bitter taste, he said.
If that is not enough sweetness for people the bakery is giving CAB bite sized cookies for those who come to Shot Night.
At 6 p.m. the stage will have MSU performers singing songs like an open mic night. Olivia Herring will be one of the students, Jones said.
Jason McCain will take the stage at 7 p.m. to continue the entertainment for the evening.
“He’s pretty well known around Starkville. He’s played at Barrister’s, Fat Rabbit’s and Cowbells,” Jones said. “We’re kind of wanting to support local people in Starkville.”
McCain will be playing originally written music as well as some cover songs ranging from Dave Matthews Band to Matchbox Twenty to Train, he said.
Freshman chemical engineering major Amanda Myers said “coffee’s meant to be enjoyed and good calming music really convinces your mind to enjoy the coffee.”
“I think it’s awesome because a lot of people don’t realize there are different varieties, different bitternesses and strengths. Even non-coffee people can come and see the different flavors,” Myers said.
