The Mississippi State University soccer team lost on the road against the LSU Tigers in a 1-2 defeat Sunday night.
The game started out as a defensive slugfest with no goals scored in the first half and both teams tied at 0-0 entering the second half of the game.
This all changed in minute 57 of the game when junior midfielder and forward Hannah Johnson found junior midfielder Ilana Izquierdo, who launched the ball into the goal to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. This marked Johnson’s first assist of the season.
Despite the Bulldog’s burst of energy, LSU would rally a comeback. The Bulldogs were called for a handball in the box and the Tigers scored off the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game. LSU scored again with the go-ahead goal just nine minutes later to take the lead.
Despite offensive adjustments, the Bulldogs came up short and left Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with a 1-2 defeat in hand.
Despite the loss, Izquierdo is now tied with teammate Aitana Martinez-Montoya for the Bulldog leader in points this season. Goalkeeper Maddy Anderson also recorded six saves, bringing her season total to 33 and ranking second in the SEC with an average of 3.00 saves per game.
With Sunday’s loss to the Tigers, the Bulldogs now sit at a 6-3-2 overall record for the season, including 2-1-0 in SEC play.
Up next, the Bulldogs host Tennessee in Starkville on Friday, which is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The game will be aired on SEC Network+.
