With three weeks of the 2022-2023 National Football League season already in the books, a plethora of former Mississippi State University talent continue to make their mark on Sundays.
Martin Emerson Jr. (CB): Cleveland Browns
Cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. had four total tackles for the Cleveland Browns on Thursday in a 29-17 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The rookie corner is making his presence felt in a talented secondary.
Montez Sweat (DT): Washington Commanders
Defensive end Montez Sweat had two tackles with one assist for the Washington Commanders in a 24-8 loss.
Logan Cooke (P): Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to an impressive start to their 2022 season. One key factor to their success is punter Logan Cooke. Cooke had quite the game last week against a divisional opponent. Against the Los Angeles Chargers, Cooke had a booming 56-yard punt that put the Chargers deep in their own territory. However, it was his only punt of the game. The Jaguars ended up winning against a talented but banged up Chargers squad 38-10.
Johnathan Abram (SS): Las Vegas Raiders
The explosive and talented strong safety Johnathan Abram had five total tackles and four solo tackles against the Tennessee Titans in a 24-22 defeat.
Abram had a rocky past couple of seasons, but coach Josh McDaniels said he has seen maturity in the player after this game.
“I think what John is learning is to take his aggression and also learn how to play in control so that there are fewer misses or fewer overruns here or there. That’s a sign of a guy who is maturing,” McDaniels said.
Abram continues to improve week after week. From just three weeks ago to now, the ability to finish strong after each play is what Abram now brings to the table.
Cameron Dantzler Sr. (CB): Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings continue to put up numbers. Cornerback Cameron Dantzler Sr. had eight total tackles with the Vikings escaping the Detroit Lions 24-28.
Fletcher Cox (DT): Philadelphia Eagles
Eagles veteran defensive tackle Fletcher Cox continued to prove his dominance on the gridiron. Cox has put up at least half a sack every game since the start of 2022 season.
Last Sunday, Cox and the Eagles soared past the Commanders in a 28-8 win. Cox is tied for eighth in sacks in the NFL while also being the oldest player with three sacks in the NFC.
Cox has participated in 51% of the snaps that have been taken. With 11 weeks left, the only thing on both Cox’s mind and Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni’s mind is keeping the six-time pro bowler’s body healed.
Coach Sirianni commented on Cox after week four’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Fletch, who has a guy behind him that we drafted in the first round, and he’s working his butt off to help this guy develop, to help Jordan Davis develop. That’s special. I just can’t say enough about those guys,” Sirianni said.
