Mississippi State University students and fans should expect to seesome changes Thursday as a result of the attacks last Tuesday, Sept. 11,
including the cancellation of all classes after 2 p.m., a pre-game show at the
football game and new parking regulations.
In conjunction with the Famous Maroon Band, the Army and Air Force
ROTC have planned a patriotic pre-game tribute to the United States.
“I think it’s an appropriate time to do this, given that it’s the first
NCAA Division One game that will be played this week,” MSU President Malcom
Portera said.
Associate band director Elva Kaye Lance said the show will begin with
the regular pre-game fanfare, followed by “America the Beautiful” and a
moment of silence.
“The players from South Carolina and Mississippi State, assisted by
the ROTC units, will bring out the large flag while we’re playing `God Bless
America.’ We hope to have the flag out when we play the national anthem,”
Lance said.
The ceremony is an annual event, but because of the recent tragedies,
it may hold more significance for Bulldog fans. “I think it will be a little
different this year,” external public affairs officer for the Air Force ROTC
Kevin Williams said. “With all that’s going on up North, it’s going to be extra
special.”
Army ROTC Capt. Mike Smith said, “It should prove to be very patriotic.
It’s all being done as a result of the recent events and to pay tribute to
those who died and show support to our country.”
“I think it will demonstrate to the country that we’re concerned about
everything that’s going on in the nation,” Portera said.
In an effort to increase security, university officials are working to
establish a new policy regarding parking for football games.
“Extra security precautions, which include closing some parking lots
nearest to the football stadium, will put additional pressure on traffic and
parking management,” Portera said.
Athletic Director Larry Templeton said no one will be allowed to park
within 50 yards of the stadium.
Director of support services Paul Welch said, “Everyone’s concerned
about security issues, and they don’t want anyone to park too close to the
stadium.
“We anticipate running some extra buses over to the research park.
We’re trying to get some drivers ready for Thursday night.
“Right now I’m waiting to find out exactly what will happen,” Welch said.
