Editor’s Note: The Reflector will continue SA coverage between today and the Feb. 20 election with profiles of candidates and articles about election issues.
Student Association Executive Council elections will be held next month, with two presidential candidates running. Three of the five council positions will be uncontested.
Junior political science major Aaron Rice will run for president, along with senior chemical engineering major Jeremy Johnson. For the position of treasurer, there is a three-way race between sophomore William Moon, junior George Harris and junior Allen Arant.
Of the three uncontested positions, sophomore Caroline Adams will fill the position of vice president. Sophomore Braxton Coombs will serve as attorney general, and senior Nicole Wyatt will serve as secretary.
Both presidential candidates currently hold positions on the SA Executive Council. Rice serves as attorney general and Johnson is the administrative liaison.
The SA president serves as the official representative for Mississippi State University students, meeting monthly with President Robert “Doc” Fogelsong and other committees on campus.
“The president’s main job is being an advocate for students at MSU,” said current President J.R. Love.
The SA treasurer is responsible for the Student Association’s yearly budget of $175,000. The treasurer holds monthly meetings with the Student Association Senate as well as the appropriations committee in order to determine what causes the money will serve.
The MSU Student Association was founded in 1916 to improve student welfare and creating a clear exchange of ideas between students and faculty. The SA is made up of three branches, executive, legislative and judicial, which govern all aspects of student life.
SA Elections will be held Feb. 20. As of press time, no specific polling location has been set.
