Sophomore Mississippi State University golfer Codie Mudd fired a final-round 69, then defeated Virginia’s Steve Marino in a play-off to capture medalist honors at the Mason Rudolph Championships in Nashville, Tenn. Mississippi State finished in 8th place after firing rounds of 285-286-287. Mudd won an event for the second time in his career, the other coming at the Rice Intercollegiate last spring. His ten-under-par showing is a personal best and his score (200) is second in the MSU record books behind Alex Rocha’s 198 score at the 2000 Gator Invitational.
Newcomer Kellen Maurer fired three-consecutive rounds of 70 to finish in a tie for eighth place. Joe Deraney shot a final-round 72 to bring his total to 225, landing him in 51st place. T.J. Washburn and Christian Sohus both finished in 59th place.
Alabama finished one shot ahead of Virginia to take the team title at the par-70 Roper’s Knob Course at the Legends Club. Mississippi, North Carolina State and North Carolina rounded out the top-five. Tournament-host Vanderbilt finished in seventh place.
Mississippi State’s women’s team participated in the event, finishing in 12th place in the women’s division after firing rounds of 318-302-312. The Mason Rudolph Championship is the only collegiate event in the country hosting both men’s and women’s events concurrently at the same venue.
The Bulldogs will return to action Oct. 8-9 at the Purina Classic in Columbia, Mo.
