Dear new Bulldogs,
Welcome to Mississippi State University.
When I first came to MSU, I thought I needed to have everything figured out. I thought college would bring immediate clarity about who I was, what I wanted and where I belonged.
Spoiler alert: it did not.
Instead, it came in bits and pieces: walking across the Drill Field between classes, meeting people who would become important in my life and saying yes to opportunities before I felt ready for them.
That is my biggest advice to you: do not wait until you feel perfectly prepared to get involved, ask questions or try something new. Some of the best parts of college begin when you are feeling unsure.
You may find your place in a student organization, a residence hall, a classroom, a Greek organization, a campus ministry, a lab, a club sport or a newsroom. You may also completely change your plans along the way. That does not mean you are behind; you are simply growing.
Some of the best parts of my time at MSU came from moments I almost talked myself out of. Remember to take that chance.
As editor-in-chief of the Reflector, I want you to know our newspaper is here for you. We are here to tell stories that matter to students, ask questions on your behalf and document campus as it changes. Reach out to me directly at [email protected]—your voice matters, and I encourage you to connect with us.
I look forward to meeting you all in August and seeing you make MSU your own.
Hail State!
