Editor’s note: This letter was written in response to Delilah Schmidt’s article “Gay marriage may solve fiscal problems” in the March 29 issue of The Reflector.
The fact that same-sex marriage is illegal in Mississippi does not keep same-sex relationships at bay.
In fact, forbidding homosexuals to wed portrays an even more “immoral” environment than if these individuals were allowed to be legally bound to one another and reside in the same residence.
Just because a same-sex couple isn’t allowed to make its relationship legal does not mean that it won’t remain a couple. The couple will still go on outings together, possibly live together and maybe even show public displays of affection.
At least if the couple was allowed to wed, it would have a commitment to one another and be more inclined to form a future together (taxes, etc.). The couple could form a home together and establish a “normal” and private life.
