This weekend, the Mississippi State Bulldogs fell to the Georgia Bulldogs in a hard-fought three-game series, bringing their overall record to 25-7 and 7-5 in conference play.
On Thursday night, Mississippi State suffered a tough 9-10 loss to Georgia. The Georgia Bulldogs came out swinging, landing some demoralizing blows against the Diamond Dawgs’ defense.
In the early innings of that game, MSU’s defense made many critical mistakes that the UGA bats took advantage of, including multiple passed balls and wild pitches, landing several large blows that gave them a 10-2 lead coming out of the fifth inning.
The game remained a 10-2 Mississippi State deficit until the seventh inning when the Daimond Dawgs finally began to resist.
In the top of the seventh inning, Jack Bauer, the 2026 Baseball America Preseason Freshman of the Year, entered the game to pitch in his SEC debut, getting MSU out of a situation with runners in scoring position and only one out. In his first-ever SEC outing, he allowed only two hits and no runs in his 2.1 innings pitched.
Despite the extreme scoring deficit, Mississippi State did not give up, putting up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, led by an Aidan Teel home run and immediately followed up by doubles from Ryder Woodson and Jacob Parker.
With this display of grit and determination, the Mississippi State Bulldogs re-enter the race, setting the stage for a tense final two innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mississippi State managed to score two more runs, leading to a climactic Aidan Teel at-bat with two outs and the tying run on second base, which ended with a ground out to first base that sealed MSU’s fate that night.
Head Coach Brian O’Connor discussed the team’s resilience in Thursday’s loss.
“We showed from an offensive standpoint that, you know, we’re not going to go away,” O’Connor said. “A lot of ball clubs would roll over, and that’s not this club.”
Despite the hope that Mississippi State bats provided fans in the last innings of the Thursday game, they fell short again on Friday, sealing the fate of the series with a 1-3 loss.
Even with another outstanding pitching performance by sophomore Tomas Valincius and an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, Mississippi State still could not score enough runs to beat Georgia’s bats.
Georgia batters rank number 1 in NCAA Division 1 in home run count and top 15 in batting average. Despite the unforgiving competition, Valincius put on another stellar performance, striking out 10 batters and only allowing four hits and two runs in 7.1 innings.
O’Connor expressed his satisfaction with Valincius and his frustration with his team’s offense on Friday night.
“I thought [Valincius] was outstanding, you know. It’s a shame that we couldn’t give him a little bit of support,” O’Connor said.
Overall, Mississippi State’s loss came down to a failure to stick to its usual offensive approach. The team collectively left 13 runners on base, had a lot of weak contact and struck out eight times.
O’Connor spoke about the shortcomings in Mississippi State’s results at the plate.
“The quality of our contact was not what it needs to be,” O’Connor said. “A lot of rollover ground balls, not much to the backside.”
Despite the frustrating loss, the team was determined to give their best in Saturday morning’s game to avoid a sweep.
Senior Bryce Chance gave an optimistic and encouraging statement about the upcoming game during Friday’s post-game press conference.
“We gotta lean on each other, we gotta get back to being us,” Chance said. “Tonight, as an offense, that wasn’t us, and we’re gonna be better tomorrow. I can promise that.”
Heading into Saturday’s 10 a.m. game, Mississippi State needed a win to avoid the sweep and to show they are the kind of ball club that fights until the bitter end.
Duke Stone, a sophomore right-hander, started on the mound for MSU and had an incredible outing, starting off Mississippi State’s day with 10 strikeouts in only four innings pitched.
With the support of Stone on defense, Mississippi State’s offense seemed determined to make good on Chance’s press conference promise, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and giving fans an optimistic outlook on the rest of the game.
That outlook was dimmed a bit when, in the top of the fifth inning, Georgia responded loudly with two massive back-to-back home runs, giving them a 5-3 lead over MSU.
Mississippi State’s offense was undaunted, quickly tying the game in the sixth inning with a two-run home run from Gehrig Frei, a switch-hitting redshirt senior, and setting the stage for what could be an impressive finish in game three.
Both teams threatened to take the lead multiple times in the upcoming innings, but none succeeded until the 10th inning when UGA hit a three-run home run to give them an 8-3 lead over MSU. This lead remained uncontested in the bottom of the inning, awarding Georgia the sweep.
O’Connor expressed his frustrations with the series and his expectations of the team going forward in Saturday’s press conference.
“We showed some immaturity this weekend, and Georgia exposed that,” O’Connor said. “Overall, tough weekend. I mean, that can happen in this league, it’s no excuse, we don’t accept it, we just have to learn from it and be a little bit more tough-minded and approach the game the right way.”
Sticking with the same forward-looking mindset, Ace Reese, one of MSU’s top hitters, showed lasting confidence in the team’s abilities going forward despite the weekend’s loss.
“I mean it’s not concerning at all. We’re a great ball club, I know what we can do,” Reese said. “We just didn’t play good enough.”
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will face off against the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Tuesday, April 7, for their midweek game and against the University of Tennessee next weekend in Starkville.
