Have you ever wondered how Netflix’s “Top Ten” movies are ranked among the top 10? I have, so I watched all 10 and rated and ranked them myself, stepping outside of my usual movie preferences for some. Some were enjoyable, some were not. Nonetheless, here are my results.
The Menu (4.75 stars)
Netflix’s rank: 1 My rank: 1
This movie is labeled as a horror, comedy and thriller. In the film, a couple goes to a high-end restaurant and is greeted with a terrifying surprise. To me, the No. 1 ranking is very well deserved. I did not find the movie scary, but it kept me on my toes. I enjoyed the suspense and the plot. I knew what to expect because of clips from TikTok, but I was still surprised by a lot in the movie. It was an easier watch, but it made me think.
Back in Action (4.5 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 3 My rank: 2
This movie was ranked third by Netflix, but it was more deserving of second place. To keep their family safe, two retired CIA agents, played by Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, are forced back into spying after their former secret identities are exposed. It was so much fun to watch — hilarious and entertaining. Aside from some swearing, it would be a great movie to watch with family. The ending was exciting, and it led me to believe there will be a second movie, which I will be watching.
American Renegades (4.5 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 2 My rank: 3
In American Renegades, a team of Navy SEALs finds millions of dollars in the form of pure gold at the bottom of a lake. In hopes of helping the locals, they team up with a civilian to retrieve the gold. I thoroughly enjoyed this action-packed film. It kept me wondering what would happen next. The movie also had a bit of romance, which helped tie it all together. The story was great, easy to follow and had a final ending — which I love more than a cliffhanger. I would watch it again several times over.
The Boss Baby (4.25 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 8 My rank: 4
Learn where babies come from.
This was a fun one. It was another entertaining movie that made me laugh and helped to turn off my brain. I enjoyed all the films considered kids movies, but this one is my favorite. It made me laugh and had a fantastic lesson behind all the humor and cartoons. Sometimes, we miss the lessons behind movies.
You, Me, and Dupree (4 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 5 My rank: 5
In You, Me, and Dupree, two newlyweds, played by Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson, allow their unemployed friends to live with them. I had not laughed that hard over a movie in forever, and honestly, I did not think this movie would interest me. For a film released in 2006, it is still well-liked by the Netflix community. It was entertaining, but this movie had hidden life lessons, such as talking to your significant other before making dumb decisions.
The Secret Life of Pets (4 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 10 My rank: 6
‘The Secret Life of Pets,” in which two dogs learn how to live in the world together, was a wonderfully easy movie to watch. It did not make me think, but it kept me invested. I had only seen it once before this and did not remember it being so entertaining. I would watch it again to find something to distract my overworked brain.
Bogotá: City of the Lost (2.5 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 7 My rank: 7
In Bogotá: City of the Lost, after moving to Bogotá, a young Korean rises through the ranks of the Colombian black market in hopes of a better life. This was an interesting film. Although I initially struggled to understand what was happening, I eventually got it. There were many time jumps in this movie, which made it less appealing because they made the movie more challenging to follow. This film is not one that I would have decided to watch on any regular day — I probably never would have thought anything of it if not for this article.
Lucca’s World (3.5 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 6 My rank: 8
In Lucca’s World, a mother of two fights to find a treatment to help her son, who has cerebral palsy, which eventually leads them to India for an experimental treatment. This movie was brutal to watch. It was slow, and I found it hard to pay attention. Although it was a hard-hitting movie, its story deserved the spotlight of the top 10. I would watch it again to understand the story better.
Minions (4 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 9 My rank: 9
This movie is ranked low, not because it is terrible, but because I have watched it multiple times. It is a pretty good movie, but it would be unfair to rank a film I have seen numerous times higher than movies I have only seen once. The more you watch a movie, the more details you catch.
Fallen (3 Stars)
Netflix’s rank: 4 My rank: 10
In Fallen, a girl named Luce Price starts attending a reform school where she meets Daniel Grigori who catches her eye. Daniel is actually a fallen angel who has sought after Luce for centuries, but she dies every time and is then reincarnated into a new life. I was very disappointed in this movie and in how it ended. Obviously, there was supposed to be a second movie, but considering the movie came out in 2016 and still no second movie, it probably will not happen. I have had this book for years but have not read it. This movie has led me to start reading the book because, of course, the books are always better than the movies.
