Though, to my knowledge, no one associated with Mississippi State University suffered any harm during last Thursday’s weather, I am still appalled at the sheer ignorance of MSU officials to allow classes to meet.
Sure, the MSU brass noted in their hurricane advisory on the MSU Web page that commuters should use “common sense” on their drive to campus, but my question is, where was the common sense of the powers that be? I know my common sense tells me that a human being shouldn’t be on the road or walking half a mile to a class when there is a driving rain and 35-40 mph sustained winds, not to mention the 75 mph gusts.
Of course, the MSU officials didn’t have to worry about those conditions. I’m sure they were tucked away comfortably in their office all day sipping a Coke and watching the Weather Channel as we, the students, were soaking wet and freezing cold trying to focus on schoolwork as limbs fell and windows rattled all around us.
If this truly is The People’s University, I am sad to say that the MSU brass failed to protect their biggest asset last Thursday, the students. The decision to put us in harm’s way was simply inexcusable.
