Members of a ’90s pop group will headline a night of music, bikinis and crawfish Tuesday at Remington’s Hunt Club.
Two members of Blessid Union of Souls will perform Tuesday night at Remington’s “welcome back party.”
Remington’s will also provide a DJ and crawfish for the party as well as the conclusion of the bar’s summer-long bikini competition.
The band made famous by hits such as “I Believe” and “Hey Leonardo” has made two previous appearances at Remington’s Hunt Club. Returning this Tuesday for a third Remington’s appearance the band’s lead singer Eliot Sloan will represent Blessid Union at the bar.
“Eliot will be playing at our third welcome back party this Tuesday. We’ve had a good response to Eliot in the past and expect the same this year,” Remington’s owner Bill Norris said. “He’s a really nice guy who is extremely humble.”
The concert will consist of Sloan’s vocals and a second band member’s acoustic guitar. Despite the lack of the entire band performing, Sloan will still perform many Blessid Union hit singles.
“The entire band still tours a lot, but tickets would be expensive if the whole band played,” Norris said “This way we only have to charge five dollars and fans can still enjoy the music of Blessid Union of Souls.”
With a moderately low cover charge students and Starkville residents will get a chance to hear music from a band that got its start in the mid 1990s.
“I remember the band coming out with the single “I Believe” in 1995. It was a catchy single that really took off,” Mississippi State student David Brooks said.
After the band’s singles “I Believe” and “Let Me Be the One” hitting the charts in 1995, the band soon began to build a name for itself. The unique name soon raised questions among fans.
Sloan said the Blessid Union Web site that he heard someone talk about a union of souls blessed by God, and thought Blessed Union of Souls would be a great name for a group. However, although the band loved the name, he said they decided to spell the word “blessed” the wrong way so people would pronounce it the right way.
“The response to his previous concerts has been especially good among the girls. They seem to be really interested in him. The last time he played a whole crowd of them lined the front of the stage and waved their arms through the entire concert,” Norris said.
“It seems like they do best with love songs, which may turn off a lot of guys, but they still have a unique sound,” Brooks said.
Sloan will perform in one of Remington’s concert halls during their promotional welcome back party next Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Tickets are $5 at the door.
The charge will cover the band, bikini contest and all-you-can-eat crawfish.
