The State Theatre has a very interesting feature planned for Saturday night. On March 29, they will host Edward Lowther, who will be giving his thesis presentation, and the Cash County Survivors will be performing directly following Lowther’s presentation.
Lowther is working toward his master’s degree in multimedia and electronic visualization for his thesis. The presentation will consist mainly of animation but will also have some real life footage.
After a short intermission, the Cash County Survivors will take the stage to perform. Cash County Survivors has an interesting musical styling. They describe themselves as “country-surf punk.”
“Everyone in the band has been in and out of other bands, so everyone brings a lot of different things to the table,” lead singer and guitarist Jayson Triplet said.
Triplet also plays the mandolin and harmonica for the band. Chris Bogan is the other guitarist and also plays the banjo. Bogan provides the interest of surf music for the band, which, in turn, adds a surf influence to their music. Scott Thomas, better known as Scooter, plays the drums for the band during live shows, but his musical ability is not limited to the drums. Bassist Keith Spivey completes the band.
Cash County Survivors have been together since the end of 2001. During their live show, the Cash County Survivors performs many of their own songs with southern gothic lyrics written by Triplet. The band also plays covers of everything from Louie Armstrong to Wilco and the Flaming Lips (two bands which Triplet loosely compares the Cash County Survivors to today.)
“The band is somewhat a mixture of rock and punk like The Clash, but with lyrics about railroads and drinking, showing our folk influence,” Triplet said.
To find out more about the band, visit their Web site at www.thecashcountysurviors.iuma.com, where you can also get the lyrics that correspond to their live records.
Lowther’s video presentation will begin around 7 p.m. and last for about two hours. An approximately 30-minute intermission will take place so that the Cash County Survivors can begin playing at 9:30 p.m. Admission will be $5 at the door starting around 8:30 p.m. With such a diverse night, complete with animated video and a certainly interesting genre of music, the State Theatre will provide a night of interesting entertainment.
