Mississippi State’s Lyceum Series kicks off next week on Oct. 30. The season begins with the acclaimed Eroica Trio’s first Starkville performance. “We are lucky to have the Eroica Trio come to Starkville. I am sure they will put on a great show,” Lyceum graduate assistant Lisa Gray said.
The Lyceum Series’ mission is to enhance the educational experience by exposing students to various performing arts programs which they might not otherwise get a chance to see.
“We try to select various types of fine arts that not only students will enjoy, but also the Starkville community as well,” Gray said.
The Lyceum Series holds five shows each school year. The 2002-2003 series hosts two during the fall semester and three in the spring. The second show stars contemporary dance artists Ailey II. They perform Nov. 21 in Lee Hall Auditorium.
“Ailey II is the nation’s finest young dance group. They put on a very energetic and entertaining performance,” Gray said.
As of Oct. 22, the National Shakespeare Co. cancelled their 2002-2003 tour. This means they will not be coming to Starkville as planned next semester.
As soon as the Lyceum Series finds a replacement, they will inform the public.
March brings the Logan Canyon Winds. The Utah-based music group features the flute, clarinet, oboe, French horn and bassoon. Logan Canyon Winds plays music from the 20th century classical to various cultural styles.
The last program of the season hails from the jazz haven itself, New Orleans. The Preservation Hall Band performs April 15 to conclude the Lyceum Series for 2002-2003. They play traditional New Orleans jazz including the songs “Georgia On My Mind” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Season ticket holders are privileged to receive priority seating; otherwise seating is not reserved. Tickets for individual shows may be purchased at the door of each performance. Season tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the door or by sending a self-addressed envelope to MSU Lyceum Series P.O. Box HY, Mississippi State, MS 39762. If you are an MSU student, admission is free for all Lyceum Series events. For more information, call 325-4201 or visit the Lyceum Web site at www.msstate.edu/dept/lyceum/.
