Dave’s Dark Horse Tavern will witness the return of the up-and-rising band Homemade Water tonight. The visit will be the band’s second appearance at Dave’s in the span of less than a month, with the Water’s first performance March 2. The sell-out crowd was rewarded with a solid showing from the group, and many Mississippi State University students are excited about viewing the band’s repeat performance on Friday.
Tabitha White, a senior psychology major from Coldwater, was in the crowd March 2 and observed the band’s unique and lively style.
“They definitely have a sound all their own, and they put on a fun show,” White said. “It’s great hearing them play while seeing that they are really enjoying themselves onstage. The whole atmosphere surrounding their performance was nice.”
Although the trip to Dave’s will be only the second time Homemade Water has visited Starkville, the band is hardly wet behind the ears. Homemade Water’s lead singer, Jody Duvall, and guitarist, Aaron Joyce, created the band six years ago while attending Western Kentucky University.
The band’s chemistry has since changed with the additions of bass guitarist Kyle Hopkins and drummer Tom Larson. The foursome currently resides and hones their skills in Nashville, Tenn., aptly dubbed Music City, USA.
Despite Homemade Water’s solid musical chemistry, their style of music is not easily classified. The current trend of successful rock bands have blended various genres and influences into their music, making it almost hopeless to easily classify their style-Homemade Water is no exception.
The band’s manager, Nick Rubadeau, said he likes to label the band’s brand of play as ” people music.”
“The guys perform a very unique and distinct kind of music resulting from different influences,” Rubadeau said. “This makes the Homemade Water sound and style rather hard to pigeonhole.”
“Many compare the band to the likes of Widespread Panic and the Allman Brothers. Groove rock mixed with the soul of Marvin Gaye would be one way to classify the sound.”
One Nashville area newspaper said that Homemade Water is “the newest style of music that the Music City has to offer.”
diG Magazine praised the group saying, “From the moment you push play on their CD, you can’t stop the toe tapping. After a listen, you suddenly want to quit your day job and follow a tour. Suddenly, the world begins to make sense.”
Alisha Rogers, a marketing major at MSU, is making plans to attend the show at Dave’s.
“I was unable to attend the last show, but I was told by everyone that saw Water’s performance that they were awesome. I’m making definite plans to get there early to enjoy the show,” Rogers said.
If an unforeseen and strange sequence of events should arise rendering one unable to attend the show, don’t fret. Homemade Water will return April 4 to open for the Puerto Rican Rum Drunks.
