Superb idea that needs some work
When we get out of class for the winter, we will have more time off than usual. Thankfully, Mississippi State University will utilize this extra time to offer several winter intercession courses.
The courses will run from Jan. 3 to 14, with exams being the focus on the final day. Class times generally range from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. 1 to 5:15 p.m. Financial aid will be offered for these courses; however, the aid will not be state or federal funds.
The hours acquired from these classes will count toward total spring hours, which will offer a window of hope to some who want to graduate early or take fewer hours during the spring.
Overall, this can be a superb opportunity for students. Some classes will even take students to Europe for in-depth training.
But some have pointed out that these courses wonܬt help everyone. At the same time, this is a trial run for the winter intercession; therefore, you canܬt expect everything on the first time.
Hopefully, students will be open to winter intercessions so more specific classes will be available. Foreign language classes would particularly benefit from two intense weeks of studying. A wider assortment of classes is something that should happen.
Talk to your departments about courses you would like to take during winter intercession. The administration will never know the potential of this idea unless you take an active interest.
This is a good move by MSU. As always, if a notion may benefit students in the long run, weܬre all for it.
