‘Daddy’s Home’ provides crude holiday comedy

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg reunite in the comedy “Daddy’s Home,” which premiered in theaters on Dec. 25, providing viewers plenty of laughs over the Christmas holidays.

“Daddy’s Home” tells the story of Brad Whitaker (Will Ferrell), a stereotypical white suburban dad, and his attempts to bond with his new stepchildren, Megan and Dylan. Just as he begins to make progress with the kids, their biological father Dusty Mayron (Mark Wahlberg) shows up with the intentions to win his kids and ex-wife, Sarah (Linda Cardellini), back.According to ABC News, Dusty is the polar opposite of Brad’s goofy character.

“He is, apparently, the perfect man’s man: he rides a motorcycle, can build or fix anything, was and still might be in the military, and he looks like Mark Wahlberg. Dusty is the polar opposite of Brad – and he intends to get his family back,” the news outlet reported.

The competition between the two stereotypical characters is predictable, but still funny and entertaining. Dusty and Brad appear to not know they are in competition with one another, which is even funnier for the audience.

“From that natural conflict, comedy is born,” ABC News also reported.

The supporting characters in “Daddy’s Home” also add to the humor of the movie. Griff (Hannibal Buress) is a handyman who befriends Dusty and shows up at unexpected times in the movie, and Leo (Haden Church) is Brad’s boss who always has a wacky story to tell.

According to “The Georgetown Voice,” both supporting characters are important in keeping the movie funny during serious parts of the film.

“Hannibal Buress and Thomas Haden Church prove invaluable to keeping the movie funny. While Cardellini makes the story grounded, Buress and Church are always present—sometimes inexplicably—to provide relief in otherwise too serious moments,” the news source reported.

After a few injuries, awkward moments and many immature jokes, the conflict is predictably resolved between Brad and Dusty. “Daddy’s Home” has a heartwarming yet hilarious ending, with a few surprise appearances from other stars. The ending is also open to the possibility of a sequel in the future.

Despite the plot of the movie, “Daddy’s Home” is not a family film.  With a PG-13 rating, the commercial makes the movie appear to be suitable for all ages. However, it is full of crude humor, sexual references  and inappropriate language.
