Coach Al Schmidt and the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational on Friday. The one-day event, which will take place at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse on LSU’s campus, will begin at 3 p.m. with the women’s weight throw trials and finals.
Sophomore Emily Sanders could be a threat in that event, with her 52-6 throw in last week’s meet, a personal best for her.
The women’s pole vaulting event will take place at 4 p.m., while the shot put will begin at 4:30 p.m.
“Nicola Wilson is one of the best shot putters in the Southeastern Conference,” Schmidt said. “We expect her to have a real good showing at this meet.”
Both women’s jumps events will take place at 8 p.m. with the triple jump and high jump competitions.
“At last week’s meet, we were really trying to see where we were after Christmas break,” Schmidt said. “This week, the field is really competitive, and we hope to see where we are in reference to the SEC Championships.”
The invitational will feature several distance competitions.
The women’s distance medley relay will begin at 6 p.m.
The 60-meter hurdles preliminaries will begin at 6:30 p.m., while the finals will take place at 8 p.m.
The 60-meter dash preliminaries will be at 6:50 p.m., while their finals will begin at 8:15 p.m.
Sophomore Marrissa Harris and freshmen Laquinta Aaron are both expected to have good showings in their respective events, the 60-meter hurdles and dash competitions.
Both women advanced to the finals of these events in last week’s meet and placed in the top ten.
The meet will also feature the mile run, the 400-meter dash, the 800- and 3,000-meter runs and the 200-meter dash.
Junior Annie Falor goes into the LSU meet following an impressive showing at the meet at Clemson.
She finished third in both the mile and 3000-meter run, leading the team to a seventh-place overall finish for the weekend.
“Annie Falor had a really good day,” Schmidt said. “We were also right there with Auburn and Alabama. This week’s meet should give us an idea of what we need to work on leading to the SEC championships.”
Following the Bayou Bengal Invitational, the Lady Bulldogs will take a week off from competition and next travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invite on Feb. 9 and 10.
