    ROTC made wise choice

In the Friday, Oct. 5 edition of The Reflector, there was a letter criticizing the ROTC for their handling of the flag during the pregame show. The letter by William R. Hall stated that the ROTC disrespected the flag by allowing it to touch the ground. This would be true, except the flag that was used was not an authentic American flag. In order for a flag to be considered an American flag, it must have 50 stars and 13 stripes, on both sides. The giant flag that the ROTC unfurled only has stars on the display side. Therefore, it is not an American flag. Moreover, the Air Force ROTC Color Guard presents the flag at countless other football games with the utmost respect. If you want to write a letter about patriotism, write about that.
The ROTC, as much as or more than anyone, is aware of flag customs and procedures and would be the last to disrespect the flag. Remember, many of us have already made a commitment to put ourselves in harm’s way to protect that flag and what it stands for.
Hall’s patriotism is right on, but the information is bad. While the giant game flag is a flag, it’s just not an American flag.
