The beginning of the 2003 spring semester brings with it a variety of new faces to the faculty of the MSU geosciences department, which has announced the addition of five new members.
During the fall of 2002, Climate Laboratory Coordinator Tim Wallace left to pursue other career opportunities, and searches were conducted to fill that position, now reclassified, and a new GIS faculty position that had been developed as part of the Mississippi Space Commerce Initiative.
As of Jan. 1, John H. Cartwright joined the Department as the new GIS Laboratory Coordinator and Dr. William H Cooke III, joined as a new assistant professor to teach GIS and remote sensing.
In addition, three more instructors were added in the distance learning program this month.
Joseph J. Gilbert will assist in geology instruction, teaching GIS theory and application, geologic mapping and structural geology.
Tracy Norton will assist in teaching delivery technology.
Dr. Kathleen M. Sherman-Morris will teach meteorology instruction and research methods. Sherman-Morris received her masters degree in geosciences from MSU and attended Florida State for the past three years.
“The geosciences department here at Mississippi State is really great. Most of the professors I knew from going to school here still teach here, so it’s good to see some of the same faces,” Sherman-Morris said.
This spring semester, MSU has hired around 40 new professors, ranging in departments from aerospace engineering to psychology. New faculty has also been added to the Meridian Division of Arts and Sciences, according to the Human Resources Department of MSU.
