To kick off the festivities of Super Bulldog Weekend, the Sgt. Bully’s Lonely Hearts Club Jam will take control of the Cotton District Thursday night, From 6 p.m. until 12 midnight, Maxwell Street will be filled with the sounds of the Cedar Creek Ramblers, Inner 61, a disc jockey and the Cover Girls.
Sgt. Bully’s Lonely Hearts Club Jam is a musical celebration sponsored by Campus Activities Board, Starkville Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Black Student Alliance.
“We wanted to put on an event for students, community members and the alumni coming for Super Bulldog Weekend. Because the Bulldog Bash was such a big hit, we wanted to do something like that again,” Kelly Nesbit, advisor of the Campus Activities Board and associate director at The Union said.
The excitement will begin at 6 p.m. with acoustic bluegrass band The Cedar Creek Ramblers. Playing acoustic renditions of everything from Queen to AC/DC, the Starkville-based musical ensemble is “good ole down home acoustic music. No drums, no fancy effects, just great pickin’ and tight harmonies,” according to the band’s Web site.
Following The Cedar Creek Ramblers is the band Inner 61. This band is based out of Delta State, and they play music ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Limp Bizkit. They encompass many different styles of music as well as many different songs from a varied selection of artists.
“Inner 61 has a little bit of everything. They are certainly a crowd pleaser,” Nesbit said.
Inner 61 will begin playing at 7:30 and will be followed by a disc jockey. The Black Student Alliance will present a disc jockey to get the crowd dancing. The disc jockey will begin around 9 p.m.
At 10:30 p.m., the Cover Girls will take the stage. The Cover Girls are an 80’s cover band from Alabama. They cover not only ’80s singers such as Cyndi Lauper, The Go-Go’s, and The Bangles, but also cover songs from current bands like No Doubt and Hole. The Cover Girls will be playing until midnight.
This event is completely free and open to the public. Three bands, a disc jockey and constant excitement are free thanks to the Sgt. Bully’s Lonely Hearts Club Jam.
The name was derived from the Beatles’ album titled “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.” The t-shirts for the Sgt. Bully’s Lonely Hearts Club Jam reflect the Beatles’ album cover, except that the Beatles’ heads are replaced with bulldog heads. The t-shirts can be purchased for $10 from the Campus Activities Board office (room 118 in The Union), or by calling 325-2930. T-shirts will also be available at the event Thursday night.
“We want everyone to come out. There is supposed to be pretty weather, and it will be a great event,” Nesbit said.
In the case of inclement weather, the jam will be moved to the Mississippi Horse Park. There will also be a refreshment stand that will be selling cups for the event.
The Sgt. Bully’s Lonely Hearts Club Jam is an opportunity to have some fun and enjoy free entertainment. For more information, visit the website for the event at www.msstate.edu/or/cab/sgtbully. The web site also offers links to each of the bands’ web sites for more information about the bands.
