College students across the nation are packed into gyms, weight rooms and tanning beds for one reason–the college student’s best friend, spring break. The spring holiday is rapidly approaching, and with it comes the careful planning and prepping of what to do and where to go. For many college students, Panama City Beach’s Club La Vela is the only alternative, and The Bar Formerly Known as Cheers is helping to send a few lucky Mississippi State students to the Florida hot spot for free.
The Bar Formerly Known as Cheers is holding a weekly contest to provide students with a year’s free membership to the hottest club in Panama City, Club La Vela. Every Tuesday night, from now until spring break, patrons of The Bar will receive a ticket upon entrance, and a random drawing will take place at the end of the night. The lucky patron whose number is called receives the Club La Vela membership.
Daniel Holland, The Bar’s owner, said there are benefits of being a member of Club La Vela.
“The membership pass allows you the freedom of no cover charge, local drink specials, VIP access, free parking and the ability to cut straight to the front of the line without waiting for hours,” Holland said.
“Just getting the cover waived helps out a lot, but the great thing about the membership is not having to wait in line to enter. The lines are sometimes 200 to 300 yards long just to get in.”
The Bar Formerly Known as Cheers offers other specials on Tuesday nights. Students can enjoy the newly renovated look of the bar while hanging out with good friends and good music.
The contest began a couple of weeks ago, and two MSU students have already received the free Club La Vela pass, and with more chances to win remaining, a few students may be changing their spring break destination to Panama City.
Joshua V. Jackson, a senior industrial engineer major, said, “I was planning on flying out to L.A. for spring break, but if I were to win a free membership to the club, I would definitely have to consider changing my plans.
“I think it would be awesome to have the VIP treatment at Club La Vela. It is a pretty popular club, seeing that it’s on MTV almost every year.”
Heather Tullos, another MSU student, has already made plans to travel to Panama City for the break.
“My friends talked me into going down to the beach at the first of the semester. Panama City Beach is where we usually go, and I would love to win the spring break contest,” Tullos said.
“It would save me a lot of time and money that I could use somewhere else since the cover for the club is usually like $15.”
Cover to get into The Bar Formerly Known as Cheers is $5 on Tuesday nights. For more information, call Daniel Holland or The Bar’s staff at 324-2129.
