Zeta Phi Beta sorority gives back to the community during Finer Womanhood Week. “Finer Womanhood Week is observed annually to enable the sorority to give back to the community through informative programs and charitable events,” Zeta Phi Beta President Yolandria Henderson said. “We feel this week is important to both men and women, because it helps to develop their character and to inform them of issues that many think primarily involve women.”
The women chose the issues of breast cancer and diabetes to interest and relate to all different groups of society.
Vice President La’Kitha Bledsoe said, “The issues that we are displaying this year are etiquette, diabetes and breast cancer.”
“All of these issues are important to MSU, because we want students/faculty to realize that these issues involve everyone even young and old,” Bledsoe said.
Personal reasons also influenced the choosing of these topics.
LaKenya Thomas said, “The majority of our members have had to deal with at least one or both of these very important issues in our families.”
Zeta Phi Beta’s philanthropy keeps them involved in the community.
“Our philanthropy is the Stork’s Nest,” LaToya Bledsoe said. “It is a March of Dimes agency that provides prenatal and postpartum education to expectant mothers.”
The women of Zeta Phi Beta look for positive qualities in new members.
Lolita Wallace said, “We look for people who uphold all of our principles which are: finer womanhood, scholarship, service and sisterhood.”
The sorority welcomes variety and difference.
“Our sorority does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, or color,” Wallace said. “To prove this point, our chapter is the first and only historically African American sorority on this campus to induct a non African American member.”
Shasta Bowens said that Finer Womanhood Week involves local Zetas, the MSU campus and the Starkville community.
