Have any of you ever been into Bulldog Deli and seen the posters of all the talented and popular bands that used to come to Mississippi State University? Me, too.
I know that Bulldog Bash had good bands play for us, but that’s once a year. And yes, I understand that fraternities have awesome bands play at the houses and that bars have good bands, but this still excludes some people from enjoying the music. I just wonder why we don’t get people to play at the coliseum; it’s plenty big, and since it is on campus people wouldn’t have to drive far, if at all, so it would draw in a lot of students.
If the problem lies within the school’s financial situation, maybe a school-oriented group could raise money to pay the band and the crews that would work the event. Another solution would be the price of the tickets; most students don’t mind paying a lot for a musical group or person they would like to see. Students wouldn’t mind paying more for a ticket at the coliseum because gas wouldn’t be included in the price, and neither would food, unless it was by choice.
There are many bands close to Mississippi that would probably enjoy playing for college students. People love concerts, even if people aren’t crazy about the band. If the band was big enough, it would be no problem filling the seats in the coliseum.
And after all the tragic events that have happened to the South in the past couple of months, I believe an excellent way to raise money for the people in need would be a charity concert. When people know their concert tickets will benefit someone affected in a tragedy, they are a little more open to giving.
Maybe we don’t have enough people to help pull everything together for the event. There are so many people involved with a concert, such as the clean-up crew, people checking tickets at the doors and a stage crew, if needed. But being on a campus, I don’t think that it would be hard to find someone who needed a little extra money, or even someone who would be willing to do one of these jobs for free if he were able to meet the person or band that’s performing.
Another good reason to have more concerts on campus is that people would be there instead of the bar. The police in Starkville probably dread Saturday nights at the bars, but if everyone was in one place, it would be more organized for them. If the concert went on until 1 a.m. or later, then people would more than likely go back to their dorms, houses or apartments and do what they wanted there instead of leaving again.
All in all, I believe that more concerts on campus would be a good idea.
