Recently, I’ve rediscovered my disapproval for the registration system, as most of my readers know. But another thing that I discovered is that there is a logical and non-sarcastic way of dealing with this. Although I am still considering scalping classes, I think a better (or at least equivalent) way of getting the education that students need is to attend Maymester. After having a one-on-one talk with the head of the communication department, I feel that I will have a better chance at registering for the classes I want.
For those who don’t know, Maymester is a 16-day period where students can take a number of offered classes. This is a great option for those who have apartments and can only get out of their lease after May. It happens that some of the classes that I wanted to take in the fall semester are offered in this term and the summer term as well. As a student, I understand that it might turn some people off that the classes are $189.75 per hour, but Mississippi State will offer financial aid to those who need it and qualify for it.
A problem some departments are having with Maymester classes is that there aren’t enough students signing up for them. This will ultimately result in the departments having to cut back the classes, and the students who did sign up for classes will have to take those classes in the fall or in later summer terms. To me, this doesn’t really seem fair to those who really wish to take the classes in May, and if this happens, it will probably taint some students’ summer plans. The only way to fix this problem is to encourage more people to sign up for the classes they wish to attend. Yes, going to school on a Saturday for a few hours will not be enjoyable, but when students graduate and get jobs, a lot of them will be working on Saturdays all day long.
I hope that more students sign up for the classes that the school is offering in May, and hopefully the university can keep this program going. This will also be good for those who don’t even plan to attend Maymester, because our regular spring term classes will end sooner so that the school can make room for this mid-month term.
