“Bulldog Bash” are the words on everyone’s lips this week as we wait for Ludacris to bless the stage in downtown Starkville this Friday. Making his debut in 1998 on Timbaland’s album “Tim’s Bio: Life from the Basement” where he is featured on the song “Phat Rabbit,” Ludacris has had quite the career in terms of longevity. With so much material to sift through, we are all wondering, what exactly will he perform this weekend? Here are my predictions.
I believe the setlist for this weekend will likely take more of a mashup or remixed approach, similar to an extended version of the Super Bowl halftime performances. This performance style allows artists to hit the highlights while avoiding plateaus during the set. While Ludacris does have quite a few songs that are entirely his own, several of the songs he is most known for are features he did as part of the ’90s wave of pop acts adding rappers to their songs.
While he will definitely perform songs that are entirely his own, I think he will also perform snippets of multiple featured songs. Listeners will probably receive the chorus of the songs and Ludacris’ verse before the songs flow into one another to create a cohesive audio-visual experience. As far as features go, my predictions are as follows:
“Yeah!” by Usher, ft. Lil John, Ludacris
“Glamorous” by Fergie, ft. Ludacris
“Baby” by Justin Bieber, ft. Ludacris
Moving into Ludacris’ solo discography, I looked at what people online generally considered his best work and set lists from recent performances. I also chose songs based on whether I recognized the title. I believe he will perform the following songs, not necessarily in the order they appear:
“Move B****”
“How Low”
“Area Codes”
“Act A Fool”
“My Chick Bad”
“Wish You Would”
“Money Maker”
Finally, there has been much discourse on campus about whether Ludacris will bring a guest star on stage with him at some point. Personally, I doubt this is happening, as I do not believe there is enough money in the Bulldog Bash budget to put Ludacris and another celebrity in the same performance, but I digress.
If such a thing were to occur, who would that person be? They would have to be someone Ludacris has collaborated with in the past, and they could not be too current a name as they would need to be able to come to Starkville on a random Friday—so no, we are not getting Justin Bieber or Usher in StarkVegas. Sorry. I predict that if there is a guest star, it will probably be Taio Cruz for a performance of the song “Break Your Heart.”
No matter what Ludacris plays, Oct. 4 is shaping into a “cannot miss” kind of night.
