As the song says, “Love is all around us.” And with Valentine’s Day less than 24 hours away, the statement is proving true. While The Beatles may think, “All you need is love,” many students in Starkville think differently.
Tomorrow, while many couples are out celebrating their love with romantic dinners and clichd gifts, a portion of the population will be celebrating solo.
Valentine’s Day may be the national holiday of love ,but that is not stopping single students from planning a good time on Saturday night. Many singles are choosing to spend time with their best friends instead of a boyfriend or girlfriend. Others will be leaving town to celebrate the holiday.
Kelly Clayton, a design major, plans to go to Memphis to “hang out with some of my good friends.”
“I’ll be going home to spend Valentine’s Day with my family because my boyfriend will be out of town,” said Joanna Bates, a junior in banking and finance.
For those single people staying in town, a variety of activities are available. Starkville offers the regular Saturday night festivities, such as movies, bowling and bars.
Brice Stubbs of Cheers said the bar is offering $1 drink specials for their “Anti-Valentine’s Day” party.
“We advertise it as that, but anyone is welcome to come,” Stubbs said.
While some people tend to stress over not having a sweety to share the holiday with, freshman Chris Bupp is not worried.
“My friends and I will just be hanging out and having fun,” Bupp said.
Although Valentine’s Day is designed to be a holiday to share with a lover, it can be spent with loved ones instead. Friends are just as important as boyfriends or girlfriends. Plus, there is no added pressure to pick out that perfect gift. Whether students choose to go to dinner and a movie with their sweetheart or stay in and order pizza to avoid all the happy couples, Valentine’s Day can be fun.
As student Jeff Stebbins said, “You don’t need love to be happy.”
